Every Child Matters

As September 30 approaches, we're revisiting the story of Phyllis Webstad, whose orange shirt was taken from her on her first day of residential school. Her story inspired Orange Shirt Day and continues to guide how we talk with our students about truth and reconciliation. On our blog, Principal Kelly Farrell shares how Oak Learners marked Canada's first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, from a land acknowledgement by the lake to painting rocks for our memorial garden. We invite you to read the full post and join us in wearing orange on September 30.

What we did at Oak this week

This week, our students ventured to Sam Smith Park for an adventure in observation. With telephoto lenses in hand, they discovered a whole new way to see the world around them: butterflies up close, birds in flight, turtles basking in the sun. Outdoor education isn't just about being outside; it's about developing curiosity, patience, and wonder. When kids slow down to really see nature, learning happens naturally.
